What is a CDFI?
A certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) is a specialized financial institution that works in market niches that are underserved by traditional financial institutions. CDFIs provide a unique range of financial products and development services in underserved economically distressed target markets, such as financing for low-income multi-family housing development, community facilities, and business loans.

What is the Community Investment Fund of Indiana, Inc. (CIFI)? 
The Community Investment Fund of Indiana, Inc. was founded in 2010 and is a not-for-profit Community Development Financial Institution serving the financial needs of underserved communities throughout the state of Indiana.

What is CIFI’s purpose?
Communities thrive when neighborhoods celebrate culture, schools excel, businesses expand, and residents engage in civic life. CIFI leverages local resources with capital and expertise to foster economic opportunity for people and places throughout Indiana. We work with local stakeholders to fill capital gaps and niches with flexible financing products to foster community economic development throughout Indiana.

How is CIFI funded?
The funding for operations and lending is secured from a combination of foundation grants, banks, socially responsible investors, and federal/state government agencies.

What is CIFI’s market area?

CIFI can provide services to any eligible business or census tract in Indiana. According to federal regulations, sixty percent (60%) of our activities must be help CIFI serve its target population, as follows:

  • Businesses must use CIFI proceeds to benefit low-income persons; for example, through job creation or providing access to critical goods and services; OR
  • The census tract in which the business is located must have a poverty rate of at least 20% AND EITHER:
    •  Have an unemployment rate at least 1.5 times the national average in a metropolitan area OR median family income below 80% of the greater of either the metropolitan or national median family income.
    •  Have a median family income below 80% of the state or national median family income for a non-metropolitan area. 

Does CIFI make grants?
CIFI is unable to provide grants at this time.
